6 Things Every Photographer Should Know

Despite being into photography since childhood, I didn’t actually know anything about the techniques of the art. When I started pursuing photography as a career nearly ten years ago, I still knew nothing, except for the fact that I was ready to give it my all. Let’s just say, I learned it all the hard way, made every mistake along the way, picked myself back up, and kept learning and shooting.

There are a few guiding principles that really got me through and taught me the most during the more formative years of my photography education. No matter who you are, these ideas resonate with most every photographer and creative out there.

  1. Remember Your Purpose | There’s ultimately a reason we all get started in photography. Let it be known it’s likely not for the crazy money you can earn right away. This career takes drive and a lot of work. As you move from the beginning of your photography through the years, know that your purpose will remain the foundation of your work. Your why can shape your brand, personality, and career (if seeking one).

  2. It’s Not All About Shooting | I know, I know, what even?! But let’s be honest, digital photography requires work after the fun photo shoot happens! You have editing, emails, marketing, website developing, and networking to tend. Remember your goals, find a balance, and remain consistent.

  3. Numbers Aren’t Everything | Whether it’s social media or the number in your bank account, these numbers just aren’t what you should be focusing on. Connecting with people who appreciate your work, support you, and hire you are the ones you need to be focusing on. If you want to earn a living, focusing on taking care of your clients. If you want to simply document your days, focus on your life and your family. Don’t let those around you hate it when you pick up a camera.

  4. Trust Yourself | If you connect with me at all, you’ll likely hear me say at some point to trust yourself. This is my personal mantra as I go about my day when I’m working, or feel like I’m not doing good enough for whatever reason. Trust yourself. You can do this. Sure, we’re going to make mistakes, but use that as a time to learn and improve. If you’re drawn to a specific style, pose, lighting situation, etc., lean into that, master it!

  5. Connect, Connect, Connect | If you’re going to make it in a creative industry, or run a small business, you truly need to connect with your community. No one will love or support you more than your family, friends, and neighbors. They are the ones who will develop trust first, who will show up when you need it, and will cheer you on. Lean into every opportunity to work for and be apart of your community, create connections, and allow your presence to develop online and in person. Not only did I join photo workshops, I volunteered for the Relay for Life for 5 years! I’ve worked with countless other photographer’s as their second shooter, accepted second shooters, and joined MeetUp groups. The options are endless and worthwhile.

  6. Find a Virtual Mentor | There’s nothing more powerful than having a point of reference to study and dissect, especially if it’s from someone you admire. One of the best things you can give yourself is to follow a photographer who you can either connect and work with in person or that has a strong online presence. Either way, learn as much as possible, then dissect it all, critique it all, and understand their process from the ground up. While this might sound strange to some, this is actually one of the best, easiest, and most affordable options to learn from.
